Tarja Halonen – President of Finland
Finland is mostly trees and water, and only bits of it are inhabited by people. Nevertheless, Tarja Halonen has been presiding over the Finns and the desolate land they inhabit since the turn of the century. Today she braves the brisk winds from the North in order to join World Leaders in Their Underpants.
Halonen describes herself as a “relative pacifist”, a largely useless term unless we know to what her pacifism is relative. Does her pacifism mount relative to outbreaks of war, as the need for peacemakers increases, or does the tossing hither and thither of cluster bombs cause her personal doctrine of non-violence to diminish?
She now enters the mostly peaceful universe of World Leaders in Their Underpants, where we earnestly hope that her relative pacifism does not see her transformed into a war-thirsty tyrant.
