S. R. Nathan – President of Singapore
Singapore is a city-state in the ancient tradition of Babylon or Sparta. Though there are many historical examples, the latter-day city-state is a rare beast, but this compendium will take us also to Monaco and Vatican City.
Sellapan Ramanathan, or S. R. Nathan, is the current and longest serving president of the “Lion City” as it is known, although lions in Singapore are scarcer than city-states in the modern world. Despite its robust economic health, reports by Amnesty International, suggest it also has the highest per-capita rate of execution and one can still be caned for varying degrees of civil naughtiness.
His election was uncontested in a country where the same party has won every election since 1959, and he joins his contemporaries here.
