Serge Sarkisian – President of Armenia
Dependent on gas from Russia, and locked into disputes with neighbouring Turkey and Azerbaijan over the breakaway republic, Nagorno-Karabakh, Serge Sarkisian’s fascination with chess is perhaps understandable. Armenia occupies the middle of the checkered board, betwixt Asia and Europe.
Seen here in his underpants, Presdient Serge also happens to be Chairman of the Chess Federation of Armenia. He was born in the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, and has doubtless spent his political and military career puzzling over complex strategic positions.
As he joins World Leaders in Their Underpants he’ll be keen to impress upon his contemporaries that he is more than a mere pawn in the game. In fact, resplendent here in his intimate things, he would urge us to see him as the King, chess’ own naked head of state, always at pains to avoid capture.
