Maria Luisa Berti & Filippo Tamagnini – Captains Regent of San Marino
Update: Hot on the heals of the capture of Colonel Gaddafi, and as predicted below, Maria and Filippo have been deposed, albeit in a more civilised manner. The current Captains Regent are Gabriele Gatti and Matteo Fiorini
It’s the first World Leaders in Their Underpants double-header, and the country that has earned this special exception is a tiny parliamentary republic entirely bordered by Italy. What’s more, despite its diminutive population, San Marino is almost certain to have changed its leaders before this collection is complete. In this respect, San Marino constitutes a drain on my resources, far in excess of their global status.
San Marino’s dual heads of state are called the Captains Regent (Capitani Reggenti) and they serve a fixed term of only 6 months. If one of you would be so kind as to remind me on October the 1st to come back and update this entry, I would be grateful.
I’ve frequently stated that world leaders ought to be changed often, but San Marino may be in the habit of changing them a little too often, given that their shared incumbency means they effectively only hold office for three months.
