Raúl Castro – President of Cuba
Raúl Castro will always be in the shadow of his older brother, Fidel, but it is he who wears the Cuban heels of office. You may be forgiven for thinking Raúl was Fidel’s son, assuming the presidency according to the sort of hereditary tradition common in single party states. In fact, there is barely five years between them, and together they represent the same revolutionary movement that brought about the current communist state.
One tradition he adopted from his brother is the wearing of military uniform in order to sustain the myth of perpetual revolution. As we see here today, even stripped to his underwear he is still very much the Commander in Chief. Unless, of course, Fidel says otherwise.
He now joins the growing army of World Leaders, many of whom may be ill-at-ease over here.
