Julia Gillard – Prime Minister of Australia
Julia Gillard is the first female prime minister of Australia and the second featured head of state in this collection whose underwear comprises two pieces. She joins Angela Merkel as one of only a handful of female heads of state in the world.
We should not focus exclusively on gender on these rare occasions, but their scarcity makes it difficult not to do so. As with Freundel Stuart and Epeli Nailatikau, we could focus on Australia’s commonwealth status and that other eminent woman we’re determined not to inflict upon you.
Julia Gillard was the subject of many requests when I embarked upon this project and I hope that the demand has been satisfied. She joins other honourable members in their unmentionables here.
