Another lesson to other world leaders. Uruguayan president, José Mujica, is a former guerilla and in his time he has been arrested, escaped, shot repeatedly and done time. And yet, life in Uruguay looks pretty rosy according to most indices used to measure such things. There is an argument that no head of state should be allowed to hold office unless they have had similar experiences. At the very least, they should have been shot a couple of times. It would certainly make a thrilling inauguration.
Popular facts about Uruguay include the one about a free laptop for every child. Avuncular José Mujica is also known as El Pepe, which translates from Spanish as The Pacifier. If we assume it was an American-English dictionary, we might uncharitably imagine that he is known as The Dummy. In fact, Pepe is a commonplace diminutive for José.
