Cristina Fernández de Kirchner – President of Argentina
Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s presidential succession was remarkable in that she was preceded by her husband, Néstor Kirchner, meaning the Kirchner dynasty has held power in Argentina since 2003. Inevitably, it was alleged that Néstor was still running the show, but, following her husband’s death in 2010, she won a landslide second term, and now, here she is in her underwear.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the war between Argentina and Britain over the Falkland Islands, and although no super-yachts have been pledged by either government, there have been ritual flag-burnings to mark the occasion. The depiction of the Argentinian president by a British artist may give rise to further conflict, given that she is known to take unkindly to caricatures. Uruguayan-Argentine caricaturist Hermenegildo Sábat was labelled a quasi-gangster by the president after he drew her for Argentina’s largest independent newspaper. The offending portrait can be seen here.
We can only hope that she’ll take her inauguration into the cannon of World Leaders in Their Underpants in a better spirit and will not feel that it is the work of mobsters, quasi or otherwise.
