World Leaders in Their Underpants #39

Bako SahakyanBako Sahakyan – President of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic

The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic is an unrecognised state within Azerbaijan, so we are on dangerous ground today, not least because it is one of the world’s most heavily mined regions. But earlier this week we all but granted sovereignty to FIFA, so what the Hell?

We previously featured Kosovo, a state that is only partially recognised on the world stage. Nagorno-Karabakh occupies an altogether more precarious position. It definitely exists and it even has its own government of which today’s featured leader in underpants, Bako Sahakyan, is president. Unfortunately, the rest of the world seems to be looking the other way.

Bako Sahakyan can parade around all day in his underpants and nobody would bat an eyelid. All things considered, it probably wouldn’t help his cause. Until I get round to adding Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Transnistria, none of these heads of state would feel obliged to let on that they knew him, trousered or otherwise, even if they were stood alongside him at the cheeseboard of a diplomatic buffet. Perhaps his inclusion here will break the ice at this purely hypothetical party.
